Amazing Grace Baptist Church is in news these days -- what with burning Bibles and condemning famous athletes to hell for fornication. The headlines have prompted lots of irate emails and phone calls to ... the wrong church.
The AG with the fired-up publicity-seeking Pastor Marc Grizzard is in Canton, NC. That's where Grizzard is torching Bibles that aren't his preferred translation, the King James Version.
It's their now-shut-down web site that listed NFL quarterbacks Tom Brady (who just led the New England Patriots to a hot-as-hell victory over the Tennessee Titans) and Matt Leinart, some NASCAR drivers and more athletes as headed for flaming damnation. But, unfortunately, the early reports zipping around the Internet didn't specify the city for Amazing Grace Baptist Church.
So, in Mount Airy, NC., Pastor Jonathan Barker of Amazing Grace Baptist Church would like folks to know, "This is not our church!"
I reached the young pastor while he was traveling to a revival elsewhere in North Carolina but he's heard from preachers and congregants at his independent Baptist church that they were mystified over the angry reactions. Barker tells me:
We do use the King James Bible and I preach why we do but I'm sure not going to jerk a different Bible out of someone's hand and say, 'I'm burning this.' No. No. That's wrong.
And I would never tell anyone or put on our website that someone is going go hell. That's between an individual and God. I'm not condemning anybody. We're just a country church in the hills where we believe Jesus is the Savior of the world. And we welcome visitors.
