Barnes & Noble sells out of the Nook

US bookseller Barnes & Noble has already sold out of the Nook after pre-orders for Christmas "exceed expectations". The company said in a statement: "While we increased production based on the high consumer interest, we've sold out of our initial nook allotment available for delivery before the holidays."

The Nook, Barnes & Noble's answer to Amazon.com's Kindle, was unveiled just one month ago priced at $259, and immediately became the chain's fastest selling item. It is not due to ship until the end of November.

Barnes & Noble said it was ramping up supply to meet the demand, but would not say how many Nooks it has sold.

Sony said last week that its $399 Reader Daily Edition, with added Wi-Fi, might not arrive in time for Christmas.
