Hollywood star Nicolas Cage brought Bath to a standstill as thousands of people turned out to see him switch on the town's Christmas lights.
The Oscar-winner was invited to the event by a local resident who put a letter through the door of his home in the city. Cage said he was both "excited and privileged" to perform the task.
The star has owned various properties in Bath and Somerset and has lived in the area for many years.
He was greeted by cheers and screams from the crowd as he said: "Thank you citizens of Bath, citizens of Somerset, for your kindness and your graciousness in welcoming me to your beautiful community."
"I wish you all prosperity in the new year, not just in your work but also in the love you share with your families," he added.
Scores of extra police officers and security marshals were brought in for the event, and several city centre streets were closed on Thursday because of the large crowds.
The festivities also signalled the opening of the Bath Christmas Market, featuring more than 100 traditional wooden chalets.
Last month Cage also visited Bath's Royal United Hospital to support a campaign for a new neo-natal unit.
