You better watch out: Santa's coming

The arrival of the man in the red suit and white beard is being prepared for with great enthusiasm this year throughout Northumberland. Santa Claus parades start as early as this weekend in Brighton and Cobourg, with other festive activities and parades following in other locales throughout the next few weeks.

Mrs. Claus in joining Santa this year when the Cobourg parade rolls along starting 2 p. m. this Sunday, Nov. 22, and winds its way along King Street after leaving the float-staging area on Abbott Boulevard. Twelve bands are taking part this year and some officers of the Toronto Police's mounted unit are escorting Santa.

Letters to Santa will be collected along the parade route by Canada Post employees and there will be a non-perishable food collection.

Hot chocolate will warm Santa's younger followers in the library at the end of the parade.

(See the entire parade route at www.cobourgsantaparade.ca .)

A mandatory meeting for parade participants, hosted by the Downtown Business Improvement Area and local Lions and Lionesses, will be held tonight at the Lions Community Centre at 7 p. m.

Brighton's parade starts this Friday evening at 7 p. m. just after the Christmas lights are switched on, about a half-hour earlier. For more information call 613-475-0670.

In Port Hope, the Capitol Christmas Festival of Trees begins Nov. 27 and continues until Dec. 20 at the Capitol Theatre. A great lighting display, replicas of historical local buildings, fills the park next door starting the same evening and continuing until year's end.

"Drop by the Capitol Theatre and view over 75 beautifully decorated trees (available for raffle)," states an invitation from the town.

"Thousands of lights decorate the theatre, enjoy a hot chocolate and cider. The Candlelight Walk and Carol Singing starts at 7 p. m. Carolers meet at the corner of Pine and Walton street to receive their candles, and then parade down main street to Memorial Park for refreshments and the lighting ceremony."

Also starting Friday, Nov. 27, and continuing for three days, is the Port Hope Kinette Christmas General Store, in the Knights of Columbus Building. There are great crafts, Christmas gifts and baking.
