When choose-and-cut Christmas tree growers in Kentuckiana sit down to Thanksgiving dinner with their families, they will recognize one entity in common for whom to be thankful: Mother Nature.
The conditions for growing and maintaining their fields of pines, firs and spruces have been most accommodating.
A Fraser Fir tree on the Nieman Tree Farm near Lexington, Ky. (By James Crisp, Special to the Courier-Journal) Nov. 15, 2009
“We have the best greenery we've ever had in my memory,” said veteran tree farm owner John Harper of Derby, Ind. “The rainfall and the cool temperatures in the summer and fall were conducive to tree growth. We've had a lot of warm weather, but not that 95-degree weather.”
The first weekend after Thanksgiving is almost upon us, and that typically is the time when many families begin their search for the perfect Christmas tree.
The trees have been pruned, the gift shops have been spruced up, homemade chocolate chip cookies are ready to be baked and the tree farmers have hung their welcome signs for this year's crop of choose-and-cut customers.
Trees are plentiful this year on both sides of the Ohio River and prices overall have remained the same.
Before you head out, keep these pointers in mind:
Call first to check on weather conditions, tree availability and acceptable forms of payment (check, cash, credit card). The best times to reach farmers are early in the morning or after dinner.
Many farms prefer to cut the tree you select. They are not doing this to disappoint you but to avoid injuries and reduce their liability and insurance rates.
At places where you can cut the tree yourself, farmers request that you don't start cutting one tree only to switch to another that you decide you like better.
Farms often provide rope for tying the tree to your car, but bring some in case they don't.
If you can't tie the tree to the roof of your vehicle, chances are you'll have to leave the sunroof, trunk or hatchback open. If that's the case, be sure to pack a few blankets to keep warm.
And don't forget this guide. All of the particulars are included.
