Unite union to hold strike ballot
British Airways’ passengers could face big disruptions over Christmas as union leaders have notified the carrier of their plans to hold strike ballot.
The Unite trade union, which is opposing job-cuts and new contracts, informed that the ballot would open on November 16 and close December 14.
The Unite union said the new contracts would bring lower pay and worse conditions.
In addition, British Airways has plans to axe as many as 1,700 jobs to reduce costs.
The British Airways’ net loss soared to £217 million in the first half of the year as compared with £49 million in the same period of last year.
When contacted British Airways said, “We remain available to talk at any time and urge Unite to withdraw from its plans and resume discussions with us.”
Speaking on the issue, British Airways further added that the new contracts would not affect its current employees.
