Flaming Lips, Vampire Weekend Enjoy A Very Indie Christmas

Most of the Christmas celebrations on TV are filled with top-shelf, chart-topping talent like Shakira, Usher, Aretha Franklin and the like, but just because you aren't selling tons of records doesn't mean that you can't enjoy the Christmas spirit. Take the Flaming Lips, who are somewhat obsessed with the concept of the holiday (they made a movie called "Christmas on Mars," have a song called "Christmas at the Zoo" and regularly recruited people to dress as Santa Claus and dance with them on stage during live shows). To celebrate the season (as well as their excellent new album Embryonic), the band is offering up the "Silver Trembling Fetus Ornament." The tree-ready doodad sells for $30, and according to an introductory sales video recorded by frontman Wayne Coyne, "It is rumored to give off vibrations that help all humans progress towards an intelligence explosion. Plus, it has the potential to make you smarter."

In case you don't want to put a tiny metal fetus on your Christmas tree, there are other ways to get into the spirit of the season with the help of some indie rockers. A handful of the genre's all-stars — including Vampire Weekend's Ezra Koenig, former Hüsker Dü frontman Bob Mould, Tegan and Sara, Andrew W.K., David Cross and TV on the Radio's Kyp Malone — have teamed up with Canadian gutter punks F---ed Up for a cover of the definitive Christmas charity song "Do They Know It's Christmas?" The result takes the Band-Aid version and runs it through the ringer, creating a positive jam that is noisy and rugged but still pretty and joyful. It's for sale right now on iTunes, with the proceeds going to Justice for the Missing and Murdered, D.T.E.S. Power of Women and Sisters in Spirit, three Canadian charities. So put your fetus on the tree, crank up the cover, sip on some eggnog and let the Christmas cheer flow through your body.
